History of the Lost Property Office

The Lost Property Office started as a short story in 2004, had it’s first outing as a performance as part of David Gale’s Peachy Coochy nights in 2007, and was then developed as a commission from Deptford X visual arts festival in September 2009. It was a great success at the festival “One of our top three shows in the last ten years” Matthew Couper, Director, Deptford X.

What kind of space does it need?

The Lost Property Office was performed in a gallery space for Deptford X, in a tent for Lewisham People’s Day, in a theatre at Toynbee Studios and in  the Freud Museum. It could be installed in many spaces, for example: in an empty shop, an industrial unit, a train carriage, bus, marquee.

Other info

The installation can be run all day, in a self contained space. We have generally been in spaces around 2o metres square, but we can be flexible. It is facilitated by three artists, who explain the concept to visitors and help them join in, if they want to. A site visit is desirable, and a space with available furniture is great (any existing or available furniture, shelving etc, we can use) The get-in takes around 4 hours. We need power points for lamps and a small portable sound system. We need 20 chairs for the performance, although it is possible to have the installation without the performance if that is preferable.
